What to Know About Eco-Friendly Bedsheets?

With flooding and increasing temperatures around the globe, you may have become more aware and conscious of your lifestyle. You may also be choosing more sustainable products. Sustainable products are environmentally friendly – meaning they are made in a non-toxic production process and are easily recyclable. If you are looking for a good night’s sleep on a sustainable bedsheet, here’s what to know about eco-friendly bedsheet before you go out to purchase one.

What Makes Bedding Eco-Friendly?

Eco-friendly bedding contains moisture wicking and antibacterial properties. They are also easy to recycle. They also use less water and do not require pesticides or bleach during production. They also do not include harmful additives such as microplastics. Our clothes are made up of plastic products such as polyester, nylon, acrylic and other synthetic fibres but they also pollute the ocean. These fabrics with microplastic leach into the environment just by being washed and may end up in our drinking water and soil.

To be safe, there are certifications that approve eco-friendly bedding products such as Cradle to Cradle, Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard and Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX. These approval stamps promise that the materials used for bedding are ethically sourced, organic, safe and responsibly labelled. Sustainable bedsheets are produced using eco-friendly yes, less water in a closed-loop production process where 99% of solvents, chemicals and waste are recycled.

TENCEL™ As A Sustainable Source

TENCEL™ is a natural product made by dissolving wood pulp from eucalyptus. Cellulose fabric is produced in a special drying process known as spinning. Compared to cotton, TENCEL™, also known as lyocell requires much less water and energy to produce. Moreover, TENCEL™ is produced in a closed-loop process and is resistant to wrinkling, compared to cotton and bamboo.

The close-loop process means the non-toxic solvents such as petrochemicals used to turn the eucalyptus wood pulp into fibre is recycled again and again to produce new fibres, minimising harmful waste. Check your TENCEL™ sheets for label on how to wash and care for the fabric

Palais Suite TENCEL™ LF Imperial Gray Fitted Sheet Set

Affairs Living Singapore's Palais Suite TENCEL™ collection are certified by the Standard 100 OEKO-TEX process. Our TENCEL™ collection are certified to be without harmful substances. Our lyocell bedding are hypoallergenic and contains moisture wicking benefits, ensuring a cool night’s sleep. The Palais Suite TENCEL™ fitted sheet set comes with a fitted sheet in Queen, King and Super King size. The set also contains two pillow cases.

Organic Cotton

We are most familiar with cotton as a fabric. However, mass produced cotton could be made wit fertilizers, pesticides and genetic modifications to reduce its susceptibility to insects such as the bollworm. Organic cotton are made without these toxic substances, meaning less people and livestock are harmed due to lesser toxins seeping into the water and soil during its production.

Unlike TENCEL™, cotton requires a large quantity of water for its production to yield a healthy crop. Despite this, organic cotton is gaining popularity due to its sustainability compared to regular cotton.

Organic Hemp and Linen

Organic hemp and linen bedding are both stronger than cotton. When certified organic, they are both made from 100% natural fibre and manufactured without harmful substances. One thing to note is that bright white hemp sheets require heavy chemicals to achieve the effect so the more natural coloured hemp sheets have a less harmful impact on the environment. However, both hemp and linen are prone to wrinkles.
