Quilt, Comforter Or Duvet Cover?
You may get confused when discussing bedding with your friends when it comes to the topic of blankets. Some may use the word quilt. Some may say comforter and others may use the word duvet. What exactly are quilt, comforters and duvets? Are they the same or are they different? In this article, we will explain to you the similarities and differences of these bed toppers.
What are Quilts?
Hotelier Prestigio™ Premium MicroFiber Quilt
Quilts come to mind if you have seen the 1995 movie “How to Make an American Quilt”. Making a quilt requires artistry in the traditional way it is made. A traditional quilt comes with three layers: the top, inner batting and bottom. The top of the quilt is made of patchwork pieces of fabric you can find lying across a bed in the American countryside. These complex patterns on the top layer of the quilt are handmade.
However, modern quilts that are mass made have different pieces of fabric sewn together in a simple monochromatic grid. The inner batting of the quilt contains filling which can be down, wool or polyester. The bottom layer is made of a single piece of fabric that does not look like the top layer of the quilt.

It is an extremely breathable material and keeps you warm in cold weather by regulating your body temperature. It also cools you down in warm temperatures by wicking away moisture.
What are the Comforters?
Hotelier Prestigio TENCEL™ LF Pure White Comforter
A comforter consists of two pieces of identical material sewn together in a grid format. Unlike quilts, comforters are not ornately patterned. The fill in a comforter could be made up of cotton, cotton blends or synthetics. The amount and type of fill in the comforter determines how much worth it provides.
What are Duvets?
Comforters and Duvets are terms used interchangeably, causing confusion. Duvet could mean comforter and it can also mean the cover that you put over a comforter. Duvet cover is the fabric envelope that fits over the duvet or comforter that closes down on one side with large buttons, ties or a zipper.
Differences between Quilt and Comforter
The differences between quilts and comforters is that comforters are loftier than quilts. With the fluff and loft, comforters provide more warmth than quilts. Quilts are therefore thinner and provides less insulation than comforters. Modern quilts may feature a simple design with one colour in the top layer, with more ornate designs on others. Comforters on the other hand has no ornate patterns and is made of one type of fabric and colour.
