How To Make Your Bedroom Allergy-Friendly?

How common are allergies? 13.1% of people in Singapore suffer from allergic rhinitis, aka hay fever. If you are an allergy sufferer, waking up in the mornings or going to bed at night sneezing or suffering congested sinus might be a ritual for you. However, it does not have to be this way. Knowing how to make your bedroom allergy-friendly is a good way to keep your bedroom dust free, so that you can sleep with less sneezes and sniffles.

Eliminate Dust Mites

One of the most common sources of allergic reactions is microscopic dust mites that often thrive in the fabrics of your bedding. One of the easiest ways to reduce dust mites is to remove excessive fabrics, carpets or rugs in your bedroom. The easiest way is to make sure you clean your bedding – pillowcase, bedsheets, bolster case, comforters regularly.

How Can You Make Your Bedroom Allergy Free?

1. Manage Your Bedding

Wash your bedding fabrics regularly in hot water and dry them in the highest setting in your dryer (but please check the washing instructions before you do so to avoid any shrinkage or damage to the fabric). Air and sun your comforter once a month.

Manage Your Bedding

Avoid upholstered headboards and bed frame, instead opt for wooden or meta bed frames. Avoid buying feather pillows and quilt. Instead choose pillows filled with microfiber such as the Hotelier Prestigio™ Luxe King Pillow or Luxe Pillow. Microfiber is perfect for allergy sufferers as it is hypoallergenic. Hotelier Prestigio™ also includes Premium Microfiber Quilt and Luxo Mulberry Silk Quilt. Silk is also hypoallergenic and contins sericin which reduces allergic reactions.

2. Clean Your Room Regularly

Replace carpeted floor with hardwood or linoleum floors. Make sure you clean your bedroom regularly and preferably use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter and a double bag twice a week. Wear a face mask when you vacuum to prevent yourself from inhaling dust that floats up in the air while you clean.

3. Unclutter Your Bedroom

Create an airy room by removing any unwanted things in your bedroom. Or to organise your things by keeping them in the cabinet, drawers or wardrobe. Cutback on having any plush toys in your room and if you must have them, wash them regularly. Move books and any décor into another room to prevent the accumulation of dust in the room.

4. Manage the temperature in your room

Dust mites and mould thrives in wet or damp environment. When the weather is warm and humid, use air-conditioning to cool it down. In tropical weather, it is useful to have a dehumidifier to keep the humidity at 30% to 50%. Dust mites are unable to breed below the temperature of 25 Celsius.

5. Mind Your Windows

One place most neglected is our windows and window frames. Clean your window frames and glass regularly to prevent mould and mildew. Replace roller blinds with washable curtains and roller shades instead.
