8 Simple Steps To Cleaning Your Mattress
Have you left your mattress in neglect and wonder how best it is to clean it? It could be really cumbersome to clean the mattress. It could be heavy and also no one really washes their mattress except to air and sun it. But if you think of all the dead skin cells, dust and millions of bed bugs you can’t see on your mattress, you may want to spring into action to clean your mattress. It actually isn’t a complex process. Here are 7 simple steps to cleaning your mattress.
What is the easiest way to clean the mattress?
1. Remove Your Bedding and Gather Supplies
The very first thing to do is to remove your bed sheets, pillows, and bolster from your mattress. Put all your bedsheets and pillowcases into the machine washer to wash them. Do follow the care instructions on the label. Next, gather the cleaning supplies you need for cleaning your mattress. You will need a vacuum cleaner, an enzyme cleaner, laundry detergent, baking soda, cleaning cloths, and cold water.
2. Start With Your Vacuum Cleaner
Take the vacuum cleaner and attach it to the upholstery attachment. Start by vacuuming from the top of the mattress and work your way down. Don’t miss out the overlapping and narrow stitches on the mattress. Also, remember to vacuum the sides. Vacuuming your mattress at least once a month reduces the number of bed bugs lying and multiplying on your mattress.
3. Removing Biological Stains
The next thing is to remove spots on your mattress. They could be stains from drinks, food, urine, or blood. Never soak your mattress in any solution. Memory foam for example, cannot get wet at all. When removing stains, just focus on the spot that needs to be cleaned.
The stain remover you need depends on the type of stain on the type of mattress. Enzyme cleaner is good for biological stains such as vomit, sweat, urine etc. Spray the cleaner onto a white piece of cloth and use the cloth to blot the stained area. Then dap another piece of cloth into cold water and continue blotting on the stain until it disappears or lightens. If you don’t have an enzyme cleaning solution, you can mix a cup of warm water and a teaspoon of mild laundry detergent to do the job.
4. Removing Stubborn Stains
Some stains can be really stubborn to remove. For these stains you can spray distilled vinegar on a piece of clean cloth and use it to clean the stains. After that, sprinkle baking soda on the stained areas. Baking soda is a neutralising agent and it reacts to the vinegar. The two will cake together on the surface on your bed. After leaving the baking soda on the stained area for several hours, you can then vacuum the powder away.
5. Removing Odour
After years of use, odours are bound to emanate from your mattress. After vacuuming and spot cleaning your mattress, sprinkle some baking soda on it. Concentrate on areas where you could smell odours. Use the scrub brush to gently rub the powder into the mattress and leave it for 10 to 20 minutes. Then vacuum away the baking soda from your mattress.
6. Flip Your Mattress
After cleaning one side of your mattress, the next thing to do would be to clean the other side of it. Repeat the above steps 1 to 5 for a thoroughly clean mattress. The rule of thumb would be to flip your mattress once every three months to maintain the shape and durability of your mattress. This is especially so for spring mattresses which compress over time. Not all mattresses require to be flipped so it would be best to check with your mattress manufacturer.
7. Launder Linens Regularly
Regularly washing your sheets and making your bed is one of the best things you can do to keep your mattress clean. As a general rule, your bed linens should be washed around once a week although you might want to launder them more or less regularly depending on your specific lifestyle factors. Jumping into bed straight after a workout, sharing a mattress with pets, or being one of the 1 in 7 Singaporean’s who snack in bed might mean you need to wash your sheets more regularly.
