7 Ways To Disinfect Your Mattress

While everyone has become mindful about their hygiene habits since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, yet there is still one important item we usually forget to keep sanitised - our mattresses. Sleeping on a clean mattress contributes to proper sleep hygiene. Regular disinfection of our mattress at least once every two years helps remove all the germs and bacteria lurking underneath the surface. If you don’t wish to breathe in dust all night or to sleep on germs that can cause breakouts on your skin, there are 7 ways to disinfect your mattress.

How Do You Disinfect A Mattress?

1. Steam Cleaning or Vacuum

After removing your bedding for cleaning, check your mattress for stains. If there are no stains, you can use a vacuum to clean your mattress without using liquid cleaners and odor control agents. A good vacuuming or steam cleaning can get your mattress in a new condition quickly. If it is possible, bring your mattress to an area where there is sunlight while you vacuum or steam clean. Sunlight is one of the best disinfectants to get your mattress sanitized. Vacuuming or steam cleaning helps to remove dead skin cells, dust, dirt and allergens.

2. Antibacterial Spray

Using a disinfectant spray is similar to steam cleaning as it kills germs, critters and breaks up sweat stains. Get a disinfectant spray free from bleach as bleach can damage the fibers of the mattress. Gently spray mist of the disinfectant on the mattress surface. Do not soak your mattress with it. Or you can blot your mattress with a damp cloth dapped in disinfectant. Open a window and allow the air to dry your mattress before putting the bedding back on.

3. Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are the most common ingredients for household cleaning, including for your mattress. Fill your spray bottle with vinegar and lightly mist the mattress. After 10 minutes, blot your mattress with a dry rag or paper towels. Sieve baking soda on the mattress and allow it to sit for as long as possible in a ventilated room. Vacuum your mattress after a few hours to suck up the baking soda and then dress your bed.

4. Using Vodka

Alcohol is a natural disinfectant and vodka is a fab alternative to disinfectant agent to help you sanitize your mattress. Pour some vodka into an empty spray bottle and spray the Vodka mist over your entire mattress. Take care not to soak your mattress with vodka. As with the other cleaning agents, blot the mattress after spraying with a clean dry cloth. Open the window to allow the bed to air dry before placing bed sheets back on your mattress.

5. Homemade Enzyme Cleaner

You can make your own enzyme cleaner at home with 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide and 3 tablespoons of baking soda. An enzyme cleaner is mostly used for stubborn stains. Apply the enzyme to the stained area and allow it to sit for as long as possible. Then, take a damp cloth and gently blot the stain. Allow the mattress to air dry before vacuuming the entire bed.

6. Cornstarch

Another household item you can use to sanitize your mattress is cornstarch. Mix the cornstarch with baking soda for an effective cleaning agent. Sprinkle an equal amount of cornstarch and baking soda mix onto the mattress. Allow the ingredients to sit on the mattress for 30 minutes. Vacuum the mattress, bed base and under the bed to remove the mixture before putting back the sheets.

7. Foam Shaving Cream

Foaming shaving cream can act as a stain remover. Use a shaving foam with alcohol and spray it onto the stain on the mattress. Allow it to sit on the stain for 20 minutes, remove the excess foam and then blot it with a damp cloth. Rinse another piece of cloth into 50/50 water and vinegar solution and dap gently (without soaking) on the stain area. Let it air dry completely before dressing the bed.
