Why Do Mattresses Turn Yellow?

You may think it is good to sun our mattress to kill germs and bacteria. But the opposite is true. When you expose your mattress out in the sun for a long time, it will cause your mattress to oxidize. If you must sun your mattress, protect it with a covering.

Nevertheless, all mattresses turn yellow as they age. Worry not, the yellow shade is not harmful or toxic. The yellow stain is also caused by years of sweat, oil, or urine. It could also be mold.

Natural Way to Remove the Stain

Vinegar is the go-to natural solution to removing stains from home appliances to mattresses. It cleans, disinfects and deodorizes mattresses that have turned colour.

Steps to Cleaning with vinegar:

1. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar.

2. Spray the vinegar over your mattress to cover noticeable stain.

3. When it comes to visible stains, spray a generous amount of vinegar over it. Make sure the spots are completely saturated.

4. Sprinkly amounts of baking soda where you have applied the vinegar and allow it to stay overnight. Baking soda helps to absorb moisture from your mattress.

5. Remove the baking soda the next day by vacuuming your mattress. The vinegar would have already killed any bacteria and removed the bad smell.

Baking Soda Effects

Baking soda does more than just cleaning out unwanted stains. It is non-toxic and helps remove unpleasant odours, dust, dead skin cells, sweat and dirt.

You can also remove stains on your mattress using a combination of baking soda and essential oils. The steps are simple. All you have to do is pour baking soda into a jar and add 10 to 15 drops of essential oil into it. Mix the essential oil into the baking soda.

Sprinkle the mixture onto your mattress and rub it in using a clean cloth. This process of rubbing the mixture into your bed is known as “mattress massage”. Allow the mixture to deep clean for about an hour. During this time, the baking soda is getting rid of dust mites and other undesirable stains and particles on your mattress.

After the hour is up, remove the baking soda from your bed by vacuuming.

When to Replace Your Old Mattress?

There are ways to care for your mattress so you can make it last for as long as possible. However, there comes a time where you may have to change your mattress.

The most obvious sign is when you start feeling your mattress caving in. Other factors include your marital status - if you are getting a partner you would need a new mattress. Or you might have gained weight and need better support.
