Cleaning Different Types of Bed Sheets
There's general advice on when to wash your bed sheets, preferably once a week to twice a month in Singapore’s weather – assuming you shower at least once a day. Thinking about all the dead skin cells, sweat, oil and hair left on your bedding does motivate in wanting to wash bed linen as often as possible. Especially so during the COVID 19 pandemic, you would like to not just wash your bed sheets regularly but also in the right way. In this post, we would like to share with you how to clean different types of bed sheets. But of course, check the care and washing instructions on your bedding before following our advice.
Types of Bed Linen
Silk is a great choice for people who suffer from allergies as it is 100% natural and so naturally hypoallergenic. Silk sheets are produced by silkworms while they are in a cocoon, and are great for both cold and warm weather. They are also luxurious, indulgent and extremely soft but it also means it requires special care. Silk bed sheets are mostly made from blends (polyester and nylon) if it is not entirely from silk itself.
Laundering in the washer is not recommended for bed linen made of entirely silk fibres. Generally for blends, you can use lukewarm water and a delicate biodegradable detergent. Use a delicate wash cycle and you should only spin once before handing dry. Keep away from direct sunlight. Remember to check the washing instructions on your silk bedding before handling it in the wash.
Although pure bamboo can be made into a fabric, bed sheets that are labelled bamboo are actually made from rayon. Rayon is a silky, soft and durable material. But rayon sheets are less environmentally friendly than other fabrics as it requires the use of harmful chemicals. Rayon is made when bamboo pulp is dissolved through a chemical process, re-solidified and spun into a thread. Bamboo sheets are best laundered in cold water and dried on a low heat.

Cotton is the most popular fabric for bed sheets and other bedding accessories. It is durable, comfortable and easy to care for. Cotton bed sheets can be easily laundered in any washing machine cycle with regular laundry detergent. Though it is again, safer to check the care instruction label before washing.

Polyester is a man-made fibre and is cheap and mixed with another fibre in bed sheets. Polyester is stain resistant, durable but it can also feel itchy to some, which is why it is often blended with cotton. You probably won’t get 100% polyester bed linen but if you do, it is recommended to be washed in warm water with mild detergent.
5. Blended Fibre
Blended fibre bed sheets are normally polyester mixed with cotton, or you could also find cotton and rayon blends. Blended fabrics are generally cheap and usually mixed with cotton. Cotton blend sheets should be laundered with lukewarm water using a mild detergent set to a gentle wash cycle.
Lyocell, also known as TENCEL™ bed sheets are 100% natural and made without any toxic solvents or chemicals. It is produced sustainably and is soft and silky to touch. It is also cooling to the skin as it wicks moisture away better than cotton. Lyocell should be gently cared for by following the care instructions on the sheets. But generally it should be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle using mild and preferably biodegradable detergent to avoid damaging the fabric. Wash your lyocell sheets separately from any hard fabrics like jeans and also to avoid it from getting caught onto hooks or zips, which will damage the material. Avoid bleach at all costs as it will wear away the sheets.
It is important to care for your sheets as they are intended based on the nature of their material. By caring for your bed sheets in the proper manner, you can be sure to extend the life of your bed linen.\
